The Alexandria Forest
Hey everyone, so I've been really into the flora around Alexandria in the Eastern Cape lately, and I just had to share about the Alexandria Forest. It is this amazing coastal forest spot that's part of the bigger Addo Elephant National Park. It is one of those hidden gems where you can actually walk through proper ancient indigenous forest right by the coast, which is pretty rare these days in South Africa.
What makes it so special? It is basically this lush, green coastal forest that is super old-school, think big towering trees like yellowwoods, wild figs, and milkwoods creating this thick canopy overhead. When you're in there, it's all quiet except for leaves rustling and birds calling, it feels almost magical, like stepping into another world away from everything.
You won't see big stuff like elephants wandering around in this section (they're more in the main Addo areas), but there's still plenty of wildlife: bushbuck, little blue duikers, monkeys swinging around, and tons of birds. Birdwatchers love it, birds like the Knysna turaco popping up with its bright colours, or forest buzzards.
The hiking is what really draws people. There's the famous Alexandria Hiking Trail, about 36 km over two days (or sometimes three if you take it easy), going through dense forest, out onto stunning beaches, up massive sand dunes, and along the coastline with epic views. Day one is the longer bit (around 19-20 km), and you overnight at a hut overlooking the sea. If you're not up for that full adventure, there are shorter day trails that still let you soak in the forest and dunes without going hardcore.
Why go? Honestly, it's the perfect escape. No crowds, just peaceful nature vibes and it is great for clearing your head, whether you're strolling quietly or just sitting listening to the birds. If you love hiking, the mix of forest, beach, and dunes is unreal; challenging but so rewarding with those ocean views. And the biodiversity is off the charts: unique plants and animals you don't find just anywhere. It's a nice change from the elephant-spotting parts of Addo; here it's more about the forest and coast feeling.
It's right near our little town of Alexandria (in the Eastern Cape), easy enough to get to from places like PE (Port Elizabeth) or Grahamstown. Just head to the Woody Cape section of Addo, that's where the forest and trails start.
